What is Rubber Dam?

Rubber dam refers to a sheet of material that is placed around a tooth, or teeth, in order to allow isolation. They are incredibly useful during restorative treatments and essential for endodontic treatments.

Indications and Advantages of Rubber Dam

There are many indications and advantages with using rubber dam including moisture control, improved access and vision. Click through below for more information.

Reduce contamination

Rubber dam allows for extremely effective moisture control and preventing contamination of the operative field. This is particularly important when working with hydrophobic materials, such as composite.

It also helps prevent contamination from other substances such as blood and debris.

Improved vision and access

Rubber dam isolation lets the clinician focus more on the tooth/teeth they are working on. This also makes it easier to carry out treatment without having to worry about surrounding anatomy.

Prevents bacterial ingress

Rubber dam prevents bacteria going from a carious/pathological lesion to the rest of the mouth. It also will help prevent bacteria getting in to the tooth and reducing the prognosis of treatment e.g. if the pulp is exposed.

Airway protection

Rubber dam will help prevent substances and equipment going in to the patient’s airway. The classic example is that of endodontic files that may accidentally be dropped.

Prevent unnecessary exposure

Similar to airway protection, the other tissues in the mouth sometimes require protection from substances that we use e.g. sodium hypochlorite.

When using a wingless clamp, the clamp should be ready on the forceps to one side. You can then place the rubber dam around the tooth you are going to clamp. Whilst holding the rubber dam, get the forceps with the loaded wingless clamp and place it around the tooth in a similar fashion as above. The rubber dam will then be secure and you no longer have to hold it down.
